Medical Scribe

April 2017 • Newark, DE

What I liked

LOVE the experience, medical knowledge learned, and relationship formed with providers

What I wish was different

We work long shifts (same length as the providers) and do a lot of hard work. I understand we are paid in experience but I think the monetary pay deserves to be a little higher as well.

Advice

If you're interested in being a healthcare provider, do it! Nothing will be a more accurate depiction of the job and prepare for you all it entails.

What I liked

If you are going to premed, this is the job for you. I am able to see the doctors complete process from the initial examination to his diagnosis and treatment.

What I wish was different

I wish the training program did a better job of helping their employees to get ready for the solo shifts.

Advice

If you are not going to premed or clinical, then this is not the job for you.

Medical Scribe

July 2019 • Riverhead, NY

What I liked

I applied for this job because I would like to go to medical school and thought this would be great experience. I am still doing the job while in school, as it requires a minimum of a year commitment. I absolutely love the doctor that I was paired to scribe with. He is a cardiologist located in Riverhead, NY and he has been nothing but kind to me. He teaches me a lot and continues to encourage me to pursue my career in medicine.

What I wish was different

Although the doctor that I work with is great, he is not the actual "company" I work for. I was hired by, and am still paid by, ScribeAmerica. From the moment I was hired, ScribeAmerica has been nothing but confusing. Their organization is honestly lacking. I wasn't told about a mandatory orientation in the city until a few days prior. I wasn't told about needing to complete an online training prior to a certain deadline. I wasn't told what the uniform was. I wasn't told I had to travel to western Long island to pick up an ID card. Those are just a few examples; however, their lack of organization was so bad that I reconsidered taking the job. If it weren't for me wanting the experience and enjoying the doctor I scribe for, I might've. But other than their lack of organization, the job has been fine.

Advice

Be passionate about medical school. This job requires a minimum of 1 yer commitment, so be sure that this is something you want to do. And if, during the job, you realize that medicine isn't for you - then that's okay. This job doesn't mean you hAVE to go to medical school, obviously. But if you're serious about medical school, I think scribing is a great way to learn and start to see what it is like from one point of view.

Medical Scribe

May - September 2019 • Wyoming, PA

What I liked

Being a student pursuing a job in the medical field this is an excellent way to get exposure and experience in the Emergency Department. What I liked most about this job is the access you have to references. You are constantly surrounded by interesting medical cases as well as a Doctor that can answer any questions you have for them.

What I wish was different

This job requires you to have a 90-day probation period where they determine if you are capable of working this job. During this probation period you are only making $8/hour which is not enough for the amount of work you have to do.

Advice

Through working this job I learned that first hand experience is the best way you can learn more. I find that the topics I have to study for class are easier to grasp because of my background knowledge I learned this summer.

What I liked

The experience of working alongside actual doctors and seeing how they work with real patients.

What I wish was different

The training done over the computer rather than in person was not that useful and took a long time, although I contribute this to being hired during the merger between ScribeAmerica and PhysAssist.

Advice

Believe in yourself! It's overwhelming at first but you will learn and be amazing if you put in the effort.

May 2018 • Parma, OH

What I liked

Creating connections with physicians and learning the EMR system.

What I wish was different

It was extremely low pay for the amount of work.

Advice

Absolutely be a scribe, but learn when you’ve learned enough. Know the threshold of when your learning potential matches the cost of working the job. After the threshold is met, there is less to learn as there is more to do and sacrifice. At that point, search for the next opportunity (research, pharm tech, private scribing, etc. $$)

Advice

Always try to be positive, honest about when you are confused, and open to new patients/situations.
