Emergency Department Scribe

January 2018 • Santa Barbara, CA

What I liked

I liked how they prepared you for practically everything and the doctors and PAs were super encouraging. They often took the time to thoroughly explain certain diagnoses or procedures and would allow me to sit in for some of them.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a slightly longer training period, however I understand why there isn't.

Advice

It's a fast-paced environment and at times you can feel discouraged at your own ability to maintain a solid pace with accuracy, but it all comes with practice and the learning curve is very steep. Immerse yourself in the job if you are given the opportunity and you will learn a lot.

Medical Scribe

October 2018 • Beaver Dam, WI

What I liked

Helpful instructors and supportive managers. Efficient communication.

What I wish was different

Some instructors assume that we don't need to understand some medical terminologies; therefore, they don't explain it to us during training.

Medical Scribe

June 2017 - October 2018 • Berkeley, CA

What I liked

It’s a great way to gain insight to what a physician does on a day to day basis. If you’re pre-med I highly recommend being a medical scribe because you get to shadow doctors, essentially have access to phycians who can become monitors, and learn endless amounts of medical information.

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

Know that it takes time to get used to being a scribe; you won't know everything from the start because you're not a healthcare professional. If you work hard to improve and learn from your mistakes, the provider(s) will be much more pleased and impressed, and you will feel more rewarded from the improvements.

What I wish was different

It may have been benifical to scribe for more than one doctor during the summer when I had time.

What I liked

Great for pre-med students

What I wish was different

Took 2 months to start working after being hired, wish the process had been better organized and moved more quickly

Advice

Be patient with ScribeAmerica, the company does not seem very organized and I have had some problems with follow-through from managers. Can be frustrating but once you start working for doctors it is worth it

Medical Scribe

July 2018 • Mission Viejo, CA

What I liked

Being a medical scribe is a great job if you are interested in going into any type of medical field. The amount of knowledge in terms of medical terminology and experience obtained by working for a physician is a huge asset.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

Consider this job after graduating to have the time to really focus on succeeding as a scribe! I think it would be hard to juggle school and scribing especially having to work long shifts.

Medical Scribe

July 2018 • Ithaca, NY

What I liked

The experience because it is relevant to my future career as a physician.

What I wish was different

Better pay, better hours. I am being paid minimum wage and the hours are usually 12 hour shifts.

Advice

Make sure you have enough time to commit to this. During the summer, 12 hour shifts are very doable. However, this is difficulty to carry over through the school year.
