Emergency Department Medical Scribe

July 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I love my job. Working in the emergency department puts life into perspective. It showed me how fast you’re life can change, in an instant. Watching the physicians and staff put their hearts into people they don’t know, to make sure they’re okay is an incredible experience. It inspired me to want to become a physicians assistant, and experience this again hands on. I want this to be my life and passion.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more prepared for some of the medical cases that I witnessed. Some people’s lives were taken tragically.

Advice

The advice that I would give someone who wants to be a medical scribe, is that even though it’s a job, it’s also a whole new life experience. Take it all in, don’t be afraid of the chaos. The chaos is was makes this experience so different from anything else for me.

April 2018 - October 2019 • Libertyville, IL

What I liked

The experience I got as a scribe will stick with me as a continue my pursuit of medical school. Since the ED is open 24/7, it offered very flexible shifts and I was able to work either early mornings, or I could even work overnight shifts.

What I wish was different

I wish it paid more. For the amount of work we do as scribes, the pay doesn't seem just

Advice

Don't go into the job for the letters of recommendation or the "resume builder". Take the job seriously. Scribes help doctors in so many ways and even though it isn't always apparent, we help ease the burden of charting for the doctors. We allow them to spend more face-to-face time with patients. Be professional and take it seriously.

What I liked

I loved the first-hand experience of the healthcare field. You see a wide variety of patients presenting with a huge range of ailments. Working with an ER Physician side-by-side lets you understand the healthcare process.

What I wish was different

Advice

This is a great experience to get before applying to medical school. I might even say it is essential as this job will help you determine if you would fit in the healthcare field. So I recommend this job to those that are on the fence between deciding to pursue medicine or other clinical healthcare jobs.

The ability to work one-on-one with actual doctors in the community is extremely valuable. You also learn a lot about how institutionalized medicine works, and major health issues in the community, and you gain empathy for the sick and ill.

What I wish was different

The pay rate is rather low for the intensity and skills needed for the work.

Advice

Great if you're interested in the medical field - and having some requisite knowledge certainly helps. Be ready to learn lots of information, and fast!

What I liked

I love the clinical experience as I am a pre-medicine student. The doctors I work with are all super friendly as well and want to teach.

What I wish was different

The scheduling has been very frustrating. The company requires a very specific availability and during the school year this is hard to meet.

Advice

I would advise new applicants to have a goal area they want to work in and push for that. The job will be much more engaging if you are interested in where you are working.
